7 tips to prevent hypotension when fasting in Ramadan

Hypotension, commonly known as low blood pressure, is a condition many people suffer from while fasting. Symptoms of hypotension include dizziness, headaches, shortness of breath, and fatigue. The condition, if left unaddressed, can become severe enough to cause unconsciousness and may require you to break your fast.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind to prevent hypotension when fasting during Ramadan:

  • Get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night as lack of sleep can lead to hypotension.
  • Never skip the Suhoor meal as this can make it difficult to fast throughout the day and lead to hypotension.
  • Drink at least 2-3 liters of water during the period between Iftar and Suhoor. This will prepare the body for the hours of fasting ahead.
  • Eat fruits and vegetables rich in dietary fibers as these store water which helps replenish body fluids and prevents dehydration and hypotension.
  • Caffeinated beverages can help prevent a drop in blood pressure. However, excessive intake can have a diuretic effect and lead to dehydration and hypotension.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight for long periods of time as high temperatures can cause excessive sweating, leading to a loss of body fluids resulting in dehydration and hypotension.
  • Consume foods rich in potassium, iodine, and magnesium, such as bananas and fish. These minerals play an effective role in controlling blood pressure and keeping it within the normal range.
